The organizers of an arts market in Leeds have revised their application process following complaints from visitors about the prevalence of AI-generated artwork at a recent event.

According to the organizers, this is the first time the Alternative Market—established in 2017 and attracting hundreds of vendor applications—has encountered concerns regarding AI-generated content.

Following the event on Saturday, over 100 comments surfaced on Reddit, prompting organizers of the Leeds Festival of Gothica to commit to engaging with the community regarding concerns over AI-generated art.

Held at Leeds Kirkgate, the market featured more than 100 vendors selling antiques, fashion, homeware, and artwork.

Ensuring Transparency and Preserving Creativity at LFOG

"When reviewing applications, we rely solely on the photographs and social media submissions provided by vendors, which can sometimes lead to unexpected surprises," a spokesperson explained.

Moving forward, organizers will require applicants to disclose any use of AI in their work, specifying where and how it has been implemented, to help the team make informed decisions.

"At Leeds Festival of Gothica (LFOG), we deeply value creativity and honesty," the spokesperson added. "All of our captions are crafted by our team, and our artwork is exclusively hand-illustrated by our resident artist, Midnight Vipers. This human touch is what defines the LFOG experience, and we are committed to preserving it as we continue hosting these beloved community events."
